Due to our policy to avoid differences between the print and web version of a publication in PDF format, hyperlinks to external sources should always be made by specifying the full URL in the text of each version. Making a specific text in the PDF clickable is allowed, but the URL to which the text links must be mentioned, either between brackets after the clickable text or in a footnote. Since the full URL is thus always present in the PDF-version of the publication, best practice is to make this URL clickable.

Thus:

  1. Including only hyperlinked text, for example this link to the Brill website, is NOT allowed in PDF versions of the publication.
  2. Instead, the URL should be mentioned also together with the hyperlinked text, Brill website (https://brill.com)
  3. Since many applications, such as Confluence, automatically add hyperlinks to text that starts with https, the best way is to make only the URL clickable in the PDF: Brill website (https://brill.com)
