Access to specific parts of online issues should be set to free, meaning that everyone can access these parts, also without a valid subscription. Hereafter an overview is given of the parts for which the access should be set to free, together with the consequences for the xml.
Front and back matter
Front matter is in general included in the first issue of a new volume. Back matter is included in the last issue of a volume. There is no @article-type that can used to identify front matter and back matter. As a result, the @article-type="other" is used for both parts of a journal issues. Also, the instruction <ali:free_to_read xmlns:ali="http://www.niso.org/schemas/ali/1.0/"/>
is added to the <permissions>-group to set up the free-access to these parts at brill.com.

Contributions based on @article-type
As described in the general JATS instructions, free access should be given to contributions with one of the following values for the @article-type in the <article>-element:
- "correction"
- "editorial"
- "introduction"
- "obituary"
- "partial-retraction"
- "retraction"
Same as for the front matter and back matter, the instruction <ali:free_to_read xmlns:ali="http://www.niso.org/schemas/ali/1.0/"/>
should be added to the <permissions>-group to set up the free-access to these parts at brill.com.

Contributions based on their content
Besides the contributions that can be recognized based on the @article-type, there are more contributions for which the access should be set to "free". The article title should be used to determine if this is the case. Contributions with one of the following titles:
- Foreword
- Publisher’s Note
- List of Contributors / Notes on Contributors
- Call for Papers
- Instructions for Authors
- In Future Issues
- Back Issues
- Books Received
- (Guest) Editors in this Volume
should get the instruction <ali:free_to_read xmlns:ali="http://www.niso.org/schemas/ali/1.0/"/>
in the <permissions>-group to set up the free-access at brill.com. These contributions have in most cases only 1 or 2 pages. Note that slightly different titles might be used. In case of doubts or questions, please contact the Production editor at Brill.
