Encoding

Old Bulgarian, or Old Slavonic, or Old Church Slavonic, or Old Church Slavic (Dutch: Oudkerkslavisch), is normally encoded as Cyrillic text in most of the humanities subject areas, and then also given a more or less historic typographic shape which differs from modern Cyrillic type. In comparative linguistics, Old Bulgarian is normally transliterated in Latin script, with the addition of the Cyrillic characters known as yers (ъ, ѥръ, jerŭ: U+044A, and ь, ѥрь, jerĭ: U+044C).

Fonts

The font currently preferred by Brill for typesetting Old Bulgarian in its historic shape is BukyVede (version 3.0), mainly because it strictly adheres to the Unicode Standard for encoding various characters.

Bukyvede font sizes:

  • Brill 11 pt: ~ Bukyvede 11 pt

  • Brill 10 pt: ~ Bukyvede 10 pt

  • Brill 9 pt: ~ Bukyvede 9 pt

Other fonts, such as the various versions of Izhitsa, notably Cyrillica Bulgarian, exhibit encoding errors and should not be used.
